The 1st Battalion 6th Marines is a battalion-level infantry unit composed of infantry Marines and support personnel, based in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. It consists of approximately 1,100 Marines and Sailors. The 1/6 is comprised of H&S Co (“Hawkeye"), Alpha Co (“Apache”), Bravo Co (“Black Foot”), Charlie Co (“Cold Steel”) and Weapons Co (“Warrior”).

The mission of the 1st Battalion 6th Marines Infantry Battalion is to locate, close with and destroy the enemy by fire and maneuver.
1st Battalion 6th Marines History
The 1st Battalion 6th Marines was activated on July 11, 1917, and deployed to France from September to October 1917. During World War I the 1st Battalion 6th Marines were awarded the French Croix de Guerre in three occasions. As a result, the regiment is authorized to wear the fourragère of the Croix de Guerre (showcased in the unit's logo). After being deactivated on August 20, 1919, the battalion was activated several times from 1922 to 1934. During the course of World War II the 1st Battalion 6th Marines fought at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa. When the Japanese surrendered, the unit deployed to Nagasaki, where it stayed until June 1946. The battalion participated in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm in 1991. The 1st Battalion 6th Marines was commanded by LtCol Thomas S. Jones a decorated combat veteran of Vietnam, while the 6th Marines was command by Col Lawrence H. "Rhino 6" Livingston, yet another highly decorated Vietnam Veteran (Navy Cross, Silver Star, four Bronze Stars and five Purple Hearts).
In 2008 the 1st Battalion 6th Marines (or BLT 1/6) deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Most combat operations took place in the Taliban-held town of Garmsir (Battle of Garmsir, 2008).
The unit deployed one more time to Afghanistan in December 2009. On 13 February 2010, 1/6 took part in Operation Moshtarak, the first Afghan-led operation of the war. In 2011, 1/6 again deployed to Helmand Province and engaged in Operation Eastern Storm.
